Anticipation

In roughly 24 hours, we will be floating once again. This is exciting for many reasons. I could probably come up with a pretty good list of all those reasons why this is exciting, like the fact that we are going to be setting off on a big adventure. But the best reason I can come up with this morning is the fact that we will be sleeping in our own bed for the first time in about 10 months. And there is nothing like your own bed. I can't wait.

We hauled our floating home out of the water 10 months ago and since then have slept in an RV, in tents, on family and friends couches and floors and spare bedrooms, at hotels, on friends boats, in the dirt next to campfires, in the snow, and even in the back of our car (thanks to some unruly coyotes). I can honestly say that even though we were happy to be in pretty much all of those places (not so much in the back of the car...thanks again coyotes), we never slept as good as when we are in the boat. The boat is home and there's no place like home.

Other than our time traveling around the States in our RV, I have lived on a sailboat for the majority of my entire adult life. Roughly 20 years. 20 years of boat life is hard to wash off of a guy. I'm sure I smell like a mixture of salt air, diesel, and mildew. 3 things that make up a sturdy sailboat and a hearty sailor.

As excited as we are to set sail for Mexico and beyond, at this point, I am more excited to just get back home. Just being on the water, smelling the salt air, and the sense of freedom that the boat brings. I'm excited to watch the sunset at sea, I'm excited to wake up in the morning and sip a delicious cup of coffee in a secluded anchorage, and I'm excited to stare up at the stars and the moon on a clear night far away from the lights of a city. But mostly, I'm excited to sleep in my own bed.

Pretty soon we'll be home. I can't wait.

There is an interesting thing that happens on this side of the world. When we left Seattle, we crossed the international date line which puts us one whole day ahead of where we came from. Basically, we lost a day. Because we lost a day, Brenda turned the ripe old age of 40 one day sooner than she would have if we were in Seattle. The Garnet Ghost Town

For years before we left, I had always told people that we were going to sail around the world. Now that we've been out for a few years, I still tell people the same thing. It's a concept that makes sense to the average Joe – a circle around the globe. A start and an end. One complete lap. When a random stranger we meet on the road asks what we are doing, I still answer with, “we are sailing around the world.” But that explanation is and has always been just a quick way to put into words a concept that still doesn't make sense to most people. Because in reality, we aren't going to sail around the world. One big lap of the globe doesn't really have any appeal to us. If you don't know by now, I'm from a little town called Seattle. You may have heard of the place - it's nice. But coming from Seattle, where 11 ½ months of the year has the city covered in a cool, thick layer of clouds, and the sunshine we receive is in liquid form (rain), I've never had to become accustomed to heat of any kind. Sure, the 2 weeks of summer we get are heavenly and worth the wait, but when the temperature reaches a whopping 60 degrees, everyone starts running around in shorts and flip-flops and turning their skin that has been covered for the past 11 ½ months a blistering shade of red. And a Seattle heat wave? That's about 75 degrees. It's also when everyone who was begging for summer for the last 11 ½ months starts complaining about the heat and wishing they would have sprung for an air conditioner.
